Meet Community Influencers THRIVE LIFESTYLE // Social City Networking Interview
Social City Networking INC. is about COMMUNITY, encouraging members of the community to become more engaged positively, as well as supporting the businesses and entrepreneurs that strive to create a positive contribution within it. We aim encourage our community to become community leaders, and that they are capable of anything. We believe that networking and connecting to like-minded individuals positively contributes to both personal and professional aspects of life.
Meet Jessica Wilson, co-founder of THRIVE LIFESTYLE, and #SOCIALintheCITY community influencer!
Describe what community means to you in one word:
Why do you do what you do?
Our love and passion is to be creative. Sharing that with the world is what brings us joy. Making ethical fashion that people feel good in is the ultimate goal!
What are you passionate about?
CREATING. At Thrive, our creative mediums are unique to each of us. The common creative passion is ethical timeless style, but we each find different ways to express that. For Zoë (my business partner at Thrive), it’s through garment design and creating by hand. For myself, it starts with designing a great product and then transforming it into a medium that can then be shared with the world. I do this through photography and graphic design. Zoë are both passionate about collaborating within Thrive to help it grow!
What about Vancouver attracted you to become engaged positively in the community, and how do you feel being engaged benefits the community?
Vancouver is such a hip city! It is where we do a lot of our manufacturing so we are there regularly for meetings and buying trips. Being in the city reminds us that there is more than just our tiny island of Saltspring to share or create with. The desire to be a part of the hustle and bustle of a city like Vancouver inspired us, and brings us over to the mainland often.
Getting to engage with people in Vancouver gives us the opportunity to experience and be exposed to different lifestyles. At Thrive, we believe in the power of living an authentic life! We love sharing the message of following your dreams with people and we love hearing about it from others. It keeps our souls alive!
Out of these three words, which one is your favorite and why? Collaborate, Cultivate, Create:
Thats a tough one, I love all those words! If I had to choose I feel it would be Cultivate. I think this word can be reflected on in so many wonderful ways. Its a memo to be mindful really, which is so important in today’s society when everything is moving so fast.
Cultivate yourself as a person – Grow and learn to gain insight to your actions, “Cultivate your inner witness.” A saying I’ve grown up hearing from my dear momma!
Cultivate your life – Only keep the things + people you treasure and those that treasure you back.
Cultivate what you do – find passion at work, curate the projects you choose and the roles you take.
As I said above, really its a great word that reminds us to really reflect and think on our life and how we are building it.
What is Thrive Lifestyle inspired from, and what is it all about:
I think the idea of Thrive started in a unique place for both Zoe and Myself. For me, it was inspired by the desire to be the creator of my own life. I want to have control of the time I spend in this life and where I put my energy. So I set out to find something that i could be passionate about, something I would feel good investing my time in. The goal of creating made in Canada fashion and creating conscious fashion shoppers was something I could stand behind and get excited about!
What is one major lesson/learning you are taking away from your entrepreneurial journey so far?
Follow your JOY! I would say that we are all a mixture of fear and joy. I believe it’s our choice as to which of these emotions we let rule our lives. In business there is many times that you have to think with your business mind. But the truth is this mindset with only get you so far, the rest is left to passion and joy. That’s the fuel that keeps every entrepreneur running. So find that, and run with it. Let go of the limiting factors.
I’ve always loved the quote: “Forget all the reasons why it won’t work, and believe the one reason it will!”
Why is community important to you? How is it vital to your company professionally?
I live on the small island of Saltspring. I am surround by community and I cherish that. Knowing that we are all here together collectively trying to do better is such a great feeling. I love that within this community we are all happy to help one another. It is so special to be present in a place such as this.
Community is important to Thrive as it is what helps us to grow. Through the Thrive community we learn what products people want in there life. It gives us something to strive for helping us to be great at what we do. We love the feedback we get from our clients it’s the reason we started, to create conscious shoppers!
In your own opinion, how would you encourage others to live more socially engaged within our community?
Get out of your HOUSE! Do stuff, meet people, say hi to strangers and share stories. I always thought it interesting that when backpacking it is so easy to make new friends. However, within your own community people seem so afraid to reach out. So I say REACH OUT, become a part of something, it feels good!
What is a personal experience you have had where being social has benefited you in accomplishing your dreams and your goals?
I think the social experiences I have everyday hugely impact my success as a business and an individual. The times are changing and people want to support real people, not large money grabbing box stores. This change is a subconscious calling to be connected to something. Therefore it is hugely important that we connect to create success, not just for ourselves but for the communities we live in and the world as a whole. Collectively we can create change!
What is some advice that you would like to share to people out there when it comes to following their dreams?
If at first you don’t succeed, try again. I always try to remember that you never fail until you give up, so just keep trying. Keep your eyes open and your spirit high, positivity grows positivity.
What are your socially conscious contributions to your community, and what inspired the idea behind them?
Here at Thrive our mandate is to be socially conscious and to educate people how this plays a role in their purchases or life path. We send this message first and foremost with the way we choose to live. Following our passions and living sustainably. Another way we do this by educating our shoppers on why our products are ethical. The last contribution we make to our community is specifically to the community of local artisans and handmakers. We support a lot of them through Thrive by selling their fantastic products. However, i think the greatest aspect of this for me is the ability to help them step up their game! Educating them on the importance of branding and being social in your company!
What is your favorite local spot to get SOCIAL in the city, and why?
Ooooh, that’s a hard one. I’m going to have to answer that one in two parts.
The first is to pay homage to my little island of Saltspring. I gotta share some of the best spots. Morning Yoga at Ganges Yoga Studio, followed by a cup of Mount Maxwell Coffee and Cafe Talia. This is a regular part of my social routine here at home! Nothing is better than finding your balance then visiting in the sunshine on the patio of Talia!
In the city of Vancouver, Zoe and I have some favorites. It’s a routine stop to pop into Le Marché St. George to devour a delectable croissant and get inspiration from the wonderful cafe displays. We also tend to hit up Gastown and it’s many boutiques to keep us on trend with what’s happening in the city.
How do you feel small businesses and professionals can benefit from social within the community?
Being social with like-minded individuals creates a support group as well as a unique energy that can keep us all bustling, inspired and on task. I always get a boost from communicating or witnessing the progress of other entrepreneurs. And NOTHING gets my gears working like the idea of collaboration!
How do you feel small businesses/professionals can benefit from being social online?
Here at Thrive, we have recently upped our game a little in our online social platforms. The biggest impact it had given us is EXCITEMENT! Social media can seem overwhelming yes, but it also has the ability to give you a boost. The fact that there are people out there genuinely interested in what you are doing and wanting to interact with you is an exciting one. It keeps you on your toes, creating new content and products. That’s why WE LOVE YOU GUYS! Because of Sara (of Social City Networking) the transition into the social media realm has been an educational, exciting, fun and enthusiastic one. Once again I get so much inspiration from people following their passion and Social City is definitely very excited about community, connection and collaboration! The side effect of this, it boosts my excitement in all these areas too!
