Meet ALEX MAZEROLLE, Community Mover and Shaker (Literally.) // #SOCIALintheCITY Interview

A #SOCIALintheCITY at Wanderlust Whistler 2015 Interview

#SOCIALintheCITY Interview with Ally Mazerolle// Wanderlust Whistler 2015

Social City Networking INC. is about COMMUNITY, encouraging members of the community to become more engaged positively, as well as supporting the businesses and entrepreneurs that strive to create a positive contribution within it. We aim encourage our community to become community leaders, and that they are capable of anything. We believe that networking and connecting to like-minded individuals positively contributes to both personal and professional aspects of life.

We are proud to have Wanderlust community influencer and instructor Alex Mazerolle of The Distrikt, Girlvana Yoga, and Ladyvana Retreats share her story with us, and all of you!

About AllyAlex is a twenty-something Vancouver based entrepreneur. She is a lady on a mission to help women and girls come together and rise. She is passionate about real talk, the transformative power of movement and all things nature. She is a Lululemon Ambassador, the yoga teacher for EA SPORTS app YOGIFY, a past Pecha Kucha Speaker, worked with the Vancouver Canucks, has lent her yoga expertise to Marie Claire Uk and Flare Magazine, a Wanderlust Festival teacher and more importantly super into naps and rap music. She is known for her sense of humour, warmth and no bullshit approach.

Describe what community means to you in one word:

Why do you do what you do?

To elevate women and girls to be fully expressed. To create strong community that allows everyone to be who they are.

What are you passionate about?

The ocean, the forest, hip hop, raw conversations, community, coffee, red wine, quiet time , avocado on toast

What about Wanderlust attracted you to become engaged positively in the festival, and how do you feel being engaged benefits the community?

I love the vibe of Wanderlust. They are really open to different styles and the evolution of yoga. I appreciate the diversity and celebratory quality of the event. I get excited about bringing my own flavour and vibe to it. This year I am teaching to a lot of hip hop and RnB  for Hustle and Flow and speaking to just women for Yoga For The Modern Woman. I feel really supported in bringing 100% me to the Wanderlust Community.

Out of these three words, which one is your favorite and why? Collaborate, Cultivate, Create:

CREATE. I am an entrepreneur at heart and creating is what I do. Our studio Distrikt Movement is all about innovating and changing yoga and fitness game. We create on the daily, whether it’s a new T shirt logo, a new event idea, or an instagram video. We stayed true to our creative nature, did what we wanted and it created such an inspiring and real community from that place.

What is your passion inspired from, and what is it all about:

I grew up with very passionate parents. My mother paints, sews, knits, designs, gardens and cooks. She has always made space to do what she loves. My father is super driven and took his passion and made it his career, he was a big part of why I went after exactly what I wanted in this life. He was a big inspiration for that.  I was always encouraged to follow my heart from the start.
My passion for teaching yoga and meditation to teen girls comes from the commitment to the next generation of our women. I saw yoga as a brilliant gateway for girls to know themselves, express themselves and find compassion for themselves. That work opened the doors for me to speak to women about who we need to be for our girls and Ladyvana Retreats was born from that. I am passionate about us loving ourselves, taking care of ourselves and being whole and individual.
My passion for community is inspired by the studio I co-own with my biz partner Jian Pablico. The Distrikt is a family. It’s a movement. It’s just so dope.

What is one major lesson/learning you are taking away from your entrepreneurial/dream achieving journey so far?

SELF CARE IS EVERYTHING. But like for real, for real. I have become the queen of naps, green juice, and the occasional cry-lose my shit-feel-better moments.  Health is king and I gotta practice what I preach. I forget sometimes, just like everyone else, but I have spent too many years hustling and burnt out. The better I get at creating space for quiet, reflection and rest, the more my businesses thrive.

Why is community important to you? How is it vital to you professionally?

We having a saying at the D, that Our Community Is Everything. It is the life blood. Community is belonging, its support, its a shared experience, its common ground. We’ve created a solid community of people who come day in and day out. They are on board with everything we do. We know everyone’s name, who they are, what they are about. That was #1 for us when we opened and it has creating a string and steady business but more importantly a growing family of amazing humans.

What is a personal experience at Wanderlust where being social has benefited you in accomplishing your dreams and your goals?

I came to my first Wanderlust with Lululemon doing a  twitter takeover for the @lululemonlive channel, Wanderlust through the eyes of an Ambassador.”  I got to share all my experiences that way and it was a great little online journal. I have taught the following two years since then and love to share pics and playlists and engage with students in that way.

What is some advice that you would like to share to people out there when it comes to following their dreams?

The world needs what you got. We all have a purpose and your life is always telling you what it is through both pain and joy. Listen in. You will know the time is right to move on your dream when it is all you can think about, you can;t sleep at night, nothing else matters but bringing your dream to life. You need that kind of restlessness around it, that urgency to make it happen. That is the fuel that will drive you to hustle, to get shit done, to not take no for an answer. That was my experience anyways. You can’t be half in. It’s gotta be everything. You will eventually settle in and it does get easier. But those first few years though…

What are your socially conscious contributions to your community, and what inspired the idea behind them?

I think as far as social media goes, I love instagram. @girlvanayoga @thedistrikt and @ladyvanaretreats have been such fun avenues of expression, inspiration and information.  It’s the easiest way to paint the picture of what you do.
As far as in personal, social interaction, The Distrikt is notorious for our parties. #clubdistrikt, just sayin. And then my retreats, doesn’t get more real than that. Sharing circles for days.
What are your favorite ways/places/classes to get SOCIAL at Wanderlust, and why?
I am all a about a good dance party. Lulu throws the best parties. I don’t get out much here in the city anymore. Wanderlust gathers a lot of my favorite people all in one place, so I get a lot of solid social time over the weekend.
